Product Description

Develop your sea kayaking skills in coastal and enclosed sea environments on the beautiful southern Mornington Peninsula

Monday 20th - Friday 24th November 2017 - this event is full for 2017

Spend 5 days with us base camped in a relaxing bush setting on the southern Mornington Peninsula and experience some of the best paddling locations close to Melbourne. For only $395 for 5 days' tuition this is a great bargain (minimum an maximum numbers apply).

Locations and activities are weather dependant and may include, but are not limited to:

  • Mud Island and South Channel Fort - dealing with tidal currents
  • Paddling near the Rip - Point Nepean
  • Surf skills and rolling clinics
  • Coastal paddling Flinders - Cape Schanck
  • Kayak control in confused seas

We will develop your skills, knowledge and experiences of:

  • Paddling skills - including kayak control, surf zones and tidal currents
  • Rescues, towing - managing rescue situations
  • Navigation
  • Weather interpretation
  • Safety equipment for coastal and offshore paddling
  • Expedition gear, kayak outfitting, waterproofing and packing a kayak
  • Camp cooking - recipes, fresh / preserved foods, dehydrating

Meet: 8.30am Monday 20th November, location to be confirmed, on the Mornington Peninsula
Please be aware that we ask participants to make their vehicle available to assist with car shuttles if necessary. 

Cost: $395 for 5 days tuition
If you require kayak hire, $150, includes paddle, PFD, spray deck and safety equipment (check the box above).
If you are completing an AC Skills Award it costs $20 to register your award directly with AC.

Instructor ratio: 1 Instructor : up to 6 participants

Minimum numbers: 4 participants

Prerequisites: Completion of our Sea Starter Course or equivalent experience. Additional paddling experience such as Beyond Basics Courses preferred - we strongly suggest you practice your paddling skills following your Sea Starter Course!

Equipment: Participants will need to bring their own kayak and personal kayaking equipment (including a helmet), dry bags, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, rain jacket, rain pants, cooking and eating equipment and 2 person tent. Hire of this equipment can be arranged at extra cost.

Accommodation: We will be camping on the Peninsula - location TBA - you are welcome to join us there or organise your own luxury accommodation. Some theory sessions such as camp cooking may take place in the early evening.

Food: BYO food. We can offer some menu suggestions. Bring food with you - we will have a session on stoves and cooking as part of the program. There are opportunities to shop for anything you need while on the program and we will have a meal out one night so bring some extra cash.

 

AUSTRALIAN CANOEING SEA SKILLS AWARDS

Participants in our Paddle the Peninsula program are eligible to apply for a skills award under the Australian Canoeing Award Scheme (ACAS). There are 3 Sea Skill Awards in the Australian Canoeing Award Scheme that relate to different levels of skill and sea environment conditions: Enclosed Sea Skills / Intro to Sea Skills / Sea Skills.

The skills and knowledge required under these awards are covered in this program. Your eligibility for a particular award depends on attaining competency in the skills practiced in the course, as well as your experience. We suggest getting your log book up to date prior to attending!
