There is no set order; you can do whichever elements you believe would suit your needs or drop us a line to discuss.

OUTCOMES & RESULTS

Paddlers finish the course with the following:

  • an excellent grasp of the fundamental strokes and efficient techniques used in sea kayaking
  • knowledge of how to paddle within a pod
  • defensive paddling skills
  • practical experience of self- and assisted-rescues and recoveries
  • an appreciation of the effects of tide and wind
  • navigation principles
  • the ability to plan and prepare for paddling trips
  • an understanding of sea kayak design and performance
  • knowledge to choose the right kayak to buy

REASONS TO ENROL

  • Become a better paddler, faster – Good instruction means you can gain skills in two days that would take so much longer to gain on your own.
  • Increase your confidence – learning how to competently perform self-rescue techniques and basic sea kayaking rescues allows you to explore further and fear less. Day tripping is fun, but multiday expeditions open up a whole new world of exciting possibilities!
  • Learn right – start with good habits and avoid having to get rid of bad habits later on.
  • Grow together: learning to paddle within a group is a supportive and fun educational environment.
  • Test your skills – While you can learn from books and DVDs, there is no substitute for time spent actually on the water.
  • Pure enjoyment – good skills mean you can have more fun on the water

  1. An awesome paddle 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Apr 2016

We met at Hastings for coffee and a planning session before travelling to Point Leo for the launch. 15-20 knot NW winds and the ocean swell made it an interesting but enjoyable paddle. The trip around Sandy Point was exhilarating but under Rohan's guidance he showed that with a bit of observation and planning we had the skills to navigate through some very choppy seas. The final stretch at high tide among the mangroves to Stoney Point was delightful after the adrenaline rush of Sandy Point. Rohan was an excellent guide and instructor so we learnt a lot about navigation, paddling and group management.

I highly recommend this trip and will be looking to join future trips!

  2. An excellent paddle along the coast! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 9th Feb 2016

After an early planning session the decision was made to put in at Cape Patterson and paddle down to Inverloch in perfect weather conditions.
After a civilised lunch at Eagle's Nest we continued on our way to Inverloch and into an exciting surf landing near the inlet entrance.

Roh has once again proven to be an excellent guide and teacher as he took us on a spectacular day's outing - continuing to educate each of us in person along the way.

I highly recommend this trips and will definitely be looking join future trips!

  3. Amazing 5 Star Review

How awesome to put my skills to the test with the vast terrain of water that we encountered from Cape Paterson to Inverloch. I had never seen such beautiful landscapes and crystal clear water in Victoria. An amazing day's journey from preparation, execution, lunch and reaching the final destination. Can't wait to do another one!

  4. Holy shit ... I'm actually sea kayaking!!! 4 Star Review

Posted by on 8th Feb 2016

Although those with years of experience kayaking in blue water might consider paddling Bass Straight from Cape Patterson to Inverloch a walk in the park ... I was on the edge most of the time. Finished with a real sense of accomplishment and great fun. Terrific weather, spectacular vistas and a perfect next step in my paddling practice.
Rohan's organising skill and leadership was enormously supportive for me to swing out and stretch my skills.

  5. 16 km down the coast 4 Star Review

A very pleasant paddle down the coast from Cape Patterson to Inverloch in prefect paddle conditions. Lunch was excellent and it was good to practice some skills along the way.

  6. 26.5km 5 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Oct 2015

26.5km city to surf with a great variety of scenery, wind and waves. Never paddled that far! Excellent company and guides. A big thank you to all who were still busy retrieving cars while I was already on my way home.

  7. A swell time was had in the swell, Beyond Basics 16 Nov 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Nov 2014

This was my third Beyond Basics with the team at East Coast. My goal has been to test my skills in different environments, grow in competence (therefore safety) and be less reliant on my rudder. Big goals!!

The first was straight after the Sea Starter and I found myself paddling from Flinders to Gunnamatta Beach. With fledgling skills that abandon me more than they bless me with their presence but a willingness to learn I was coached through a challenging day at approx 22kms. We explored caves learning how to monitor the waves reversing, back paddling and yahooing through the day. We completed some group management drills which worked for me as I was tired. So a wee portion was spent being towed. The day concluded with a small surf landing that was overseen by our two instructors. It was in a word-amazing! I was hooked.
The second was earlier this year from Sorrento to the Heads and back. Again a decent distance at around 23kms. This trip saw considerable discussion around tides and some skill consolidation before we made the Heads. Oh and did I mention dolphins?

This weekend was Safety beach to Mothers beach, not excessive distance but some weather challenges. Following sea and winds of 25km/h this tested my skill level. We were blessed with constant instruction at precisely the right moment. It was extraordinary feeling a swell pick your boat up, pass underneath you and the turbulence on the back side. Bracing strokes were our friends, and now I know why we practised at Safety beach before we departed.

If you are uncertain about your ability, do not let that be the reason you don't do a Beyond Basics course (just do Sea Starter first). You will be looked after and learn so much. Equally I have been on trips with students more advanced than me and they have still been challenged.

    Would highly recommend!
