Product Description

Sea Guide is one of the most demanding Australian Canoeing certifications you can gain - this is a 2 year undertaking if you have no prior sea kayaking experience. You are expected to paddle your own trips and expeditions as well to gain further experience - there are many opportunities  worldwide in the sea kayak industry!

The first step is to undertake the Sea Guide intake weekend $395, this involves assisting and observing alongside our instructors on our weekend sea starter course - which is an  introduction to sea kayaking course for the community. We run this once a month from October to April,  you can come back and assist as many times you like over a 2 year period until you believe you are ready to undertake your assessment.

The AC Sea Guide and Enclosed Sea Guide Assessment:

The Intake weekend is for the training component - assessment will take place in three separate one day journeys and a 3 Day Expedition - please discuss prior to booking. These sessions can be done in any order, though the 3 Day Expedition will usually form your final assessment.

The day journeys and expedition are part of a process of mentoring and assessment. You will have the opportunity to practice your skills in guiding / group management both on water and in delivering briefings to less experienced paddlers who are undertaking the Beyond Basics courses. It is expected that as you progress you will take an increasing role as a Guide-under-training and if you are required to make up the supervision ratio on a Beyond Basics Course you will be paid as an Assistant Guide.

Your assessment consists of:

  • Surf Assessment day
  • 3x Beyond Basics Courses – Day Journey – check website for dates. The Across the Bay in a Day paddle, held in May, can be substituted for one of these days.
  • Beyond Basics - 3 Day Expedition held on the March Long Weekend

These journeys and expeditions can be counted towards your experience component (logbook) as applicable. Locations may be a mixture of Sea and Enclosed environments. Dates for Day Journeys and Surf Assessment can be selected in consultation with your Instructor / Assessor.

Prior to booking your assessment, you should check the assessment criteria for the Sea Guide or Enclosed Sea Guide Award, including logbook and first aid certificate requirements to ensure you can meet this within your timeframe. The logbook requirements for Sea Guide and Enclosed Sea Guide are similar, but specify different environments. All other assessments are the same whether Sea or Enclosed Sea Guide. The enclosed and coastal environments are as defined by Maritime Safety Victoria.

How much & what does it include?

  • $1200 per person – includes assessment days as detailed above.
  • Includes sea kayak and all safety gear. You are however encouraged to bring your own sea kayak and gear.
